RTPI – Sustainable Waterfront Development – A Walking Tour

At WPP we are always looking for ways to do our jobs better.

Earlier this month Abi attended an RTPI oled walking tour in Liverpool on a ‘Sustainable Waterfront Development:

“On Thursday 6th July, I attended a walking tour hosted by NW RTPI. The first part of the tour was from the Liverpool Waterfront where we were informed of the background and progress of the site. The Liverpool Waterfront has been granted an outline planning permission over a 30-year period. The development is currently 10 years in.

Sustainability dominates within the project. There is a wide range of considerations, from the ecological impacts to the community. For example, one area that has been reserved for development is currently undergoing testing of suitable planting additions. The site is due to be developed in 5 years providing enough time to find the most suitable ecological additions to the area. Furthermore, there is a strong emphasis on community involvement from hiring local construction workers to the original Everton stadium site to be demolished, replacing it with a legacy of affordable housing.

We then headed over to Wirral Waters where we learnt about the history of the development and the similar progress they are making. Wirral Waters had a different approach to Liverpool. There is more of a focus on the residential and office spaces that they can provide. They also have plans on adding light rail into the area which could further improve the connection between the Wirral and Liverpool which already boasts a quick connection.

Attending the event was beneficial to understanding and witnessing the progress and impact of the sites in real time in a short period. The impression I left with was that Liverpool and the Wirral are set to become destination places, providing competition for Manchester.”
